What’s this blog about?

I’m interested in design and small town life, and where they converge. This is not always easy to ferret out, to describe. But it’s a topic worth exploring, I think.

It’s also about my daily life in Sauk Prairie, Wisconsin and about my friends, my colleagues, and my family. Prairieopolis is a very new blog; these topics may change over time.

Where is Sauk Prairie, Wisconsin?

For coasties, Sauk Prairie is 28.1 miles northwest of of the Trader Joe’s in Madison. For the rest of us, it’s a community in south central Wisconsin with a vibrant Harley dealership and a Freethinker congregation that dates back to the 1850s.

What’s the difference between Prairie du Sac and Sauk City?

PDS and Sauk City are technically two separate municipalities. Functionally, however, we are one community. We share a school district, a police department and a Chamber of Commerce. Citizens of PDS and Sauk City freely mingle and intermarry. So I’m going to call it Sauk Prairie.
